Her science teacher was covering velocity (the rate of change of position withe respect to time). To illustrate velocity, she put my niece (aged 14) in the driver’s seat of the teacher’s VW bug. My niece told her she had never driven anything but a golf cart. The teacher placed another child in the passenger seat to call out when they passed cones she had placed in the parking lot. So I never developed the habit of just sitting down and doing it, however boring it might be. When I got into college (CalTech), I just wasn’t prepared for anything that hard. You couldn’t just read the textbooks and breeze through everything. There were hard problems to do. I managed to get through my freshman year — largely because Freshman Physics was largely stuff I already understood (mechanics: statics and dynamics) and Chem wasn’t much harder. In my sophomore year we got into electromagnetics, and the math got hard. Then relativity, and I just couldn’t solve the equations. By the time I got home my newest baby sister was born and was in neonatal ICU. She had the same condition the Kennedy baby died of when he was in office. It looked grave. My Dad had flown home. He, my Mom in a wheel chair and my sister were airlifted to Albany NY. It did not look good. In that 17 pounds was a tumor the size of a grapefruit pushing on vital organs everywhere. I am a guy, 18 years old. This happend to me a month ago. I had a fever and thought that it might be dengue as one of my friend had it. But as soon as she got to know she asked me to consult her first. So One day, my mom asked me to go and consult her. I went to her clinic, she asked me to sit until everyone is done. The friend turned against her and started bullying her, turning all her other friends against her. I was studying and working at the time (single parent) so she spent a lot of time at my sisters. This friend started telling everyone that no one wanted her and that’s why I was never home. I also died my hair from blonde to brown. But the new position wasn’t a core class, but a “special” class that existed mainly to give the regular teachers a break. The students’ behavior is always worse in those classes, because those grades don’t count as much as the “core” classes. They’re not graded at all, some of the time. Just pass/fail. On top of that, she relied on the same disciplinary methods that worked for her when she was a full-time teacher, back in the 1970s and 1980s. I have seen students go to a great deal of effort in trying to solve a problem - and that effort simply demonstrated that they didn’t understand the question or the approach to how to solve it or the principles involved in solving the problem - that is, they didn’t understand the material well enough to solve the problem. What they showed by the effort they put in was a lack of understanding. Should that problem be graded on the effort or the approach and correctness of the solution? By the time I was 25 years old, my daughter 3, and my son 5 1/2, I was putting in 100 plus hours a week 7 days a week. Mention must be made of the parents of my students who used drugs. Some were overwhelmed with worry. Of course, I set up counseling for my students who reported parents were “hooked”. One afternoon I decided to do a home visit to see what I could learn about one student grappling with parent drug abuse.
