My personal opinion but I was there and like I said watch Rock of Ages that's exactly what the attire was. The nineties were big shoulder pads not the 80s sorry. Go back and watch Designing Women matching polyester suits with gold tone buttons and huge huge shoulder pads adorned with epaulettes. We are blessed we are not living in the 80s or 90s as far as fashion. Seriously the 80s was the worst decade of fashion, ever, to date. While I know it's resurged it should have stayed buried.

A martial art only becomes ineffective relative to its original purpose when it’s no longer actually used for anything with real consequences and fossilizes around theory and tradition, as in “we do it this way because Grand Founder Foo did it this way.” For that to happen, people have to practice it who have the leisure and luxury of practicing something for its own sake with no real application. Historically, that was limited to a small class of people.

It’s only today that huge masses of people have the luxury of engaging in “martial arts” for purposes of fitness, self-development, self-discipline, or whatever else. It’s also only today that huge masses of people are safe enough that they’re no significant risk of actually have to test their self-defense skills. Hence the new phenomenon of the McDojo and boxing-for-fitness gyms, where you learn stuff that is not effective for fighting and combat, though it’s probably effective for flexibility, conditioning, balance, or whatever your goal is.

That said, there are plenty of martial arts applications today that are absolutely tested, and tested all the time. Boxing. MMA. Muay Thai. Judo. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kickboxing. Military combatives, e.g. the Marines’ MCMAP or Isreali Krav Maga. Sambo. Wrestling. The list is not exhaustive. Each is very effective for its purpose and tested with full contact and the very real risk of getting hurt, all the time.

On a cerebral level, the answer depends on your personal beliefs about death and current satisfaction regarding life. If one believes that there is some form of existence after death that is better than the current one, it would follow that he/she should be ready to die, though actively seeking a meaningless death is frowned upon by most religions. Those who are in great suffering may prefer oblivion anyway (e.g. thru euthanasia) regardless of their beliefs.

On a visceral level, the survival instinct is ingrained in most organisms with a brain, which will fight for every minute of life - just one of nature's ways to perpetuate the species.
