I helped the mom (who confirmed all this) to get a lawyer, a restraining order and plan their getaway to a shelter.Girl #2 stopped me in a store about five years later and thanked me - she’d graduated from university, avoided any further contact with the dad and was looking for a first accounting job. Girl #1 not so good - about four years later I was called as a character witness in a court case. A boyfriend involved her in credit card fraud. All I could say was she’d been a good student when I knew her and could learn well.

She got a suspended sentence, but had met a cop who ferried her to the court. About three weeks later I picked up the paper - under an old photo of her as one of their pin up girls, the story was she was dead, having played drunken Russian roulette with the cop, using his gun. I’m sure you’ll be as startled as I was to hear his subsequent penalty was dismissal from the force for improper use of his gun. Whether her problems were all true or not, she could never seem to straighten things out.

My wife and I had befriended a couple on holiday in Corfu. We got on well with them, and shared a meal with them several times and went on outings together. One day they joined us on the naturist beach and I saw both of them for the first time as nature intended. My main surprise was how fit looking the man was, his body being in very good shape, compared to my own. In particular his male attributes were very similar in shape and size to my own. We had long chats with them both while swimming or sunbathing on the beach, and I have no doubt they were sizing up both me and my wife.

As a general rule, if person A has authority over person B, it is not good for them to have a sexual relationship. It creates the possibility that person A will give person B special treatment. Maybe person B will feel compelled to grant sexual favours to person A fearing that otherwise person A will use their authority to undermine person B’s career in some way. Or maybe the relationship is entirely consensual, and person A and B love each other very much. But then person C, who is also under person A’s authority, will feel resentful because person B might receive preferential treatment - and persons A and B will find it very difficult to prove that this isn’t happening.

Of course, persons A and B might meet, work together and fall in love, and there might be no other impediment to their relationship than the fact that A has authority over B. Most organizations have rules to deal with this - typically, persons A and B would have to declare that they are commencing a relationship, and steps must be taken to avoid any conflict of interest. This is why universities need to have some kind of rules to deal with student-teacher relationships.

I had two students from the same family in two different classes the last year of my teaching experience (which was a nightmare in and of itself) who had problems, capital P. At the beginning it the year I was teaching writing to all of the eighth grade students, a job I had won because I was the only one brave enough to take it on. Unfortunately, the school came in under enrollment, and I was switched to eighth grade language arts. I had taught it before, but I knew it was not going to a picnic because this group was what could be described as “low achievers.” Many of them were less gifted intellectually, but decent human beings and kids who put in a reasonable amount of effort.

Others were more capable, but attitudinal, disruptive, and/or lazy. Some were not smart, disruptive, attitudinal, and determined to to fail spectacularly — or so it seemed. I knew, intellectually and in my heart, that many of the latter group were probably dealing with terrible things, such as neglectful parents, poverty, abuse, and mental illness. That did not make it easier to deal with them in the classroom.

Gerald and Geraldine (not their real names, but they had similar names, the male and female versions of the same name) were siblings. They were disruptive in class (talking, sneaking out their call phones constantly, making noise and pretending to be innocent if called out on it) and contemptuous of authority. I did the phone calls home, which worked slightly with Geraldine, but not with Gerald — and for a reason. Apparently their mother could not cope with them, and they were often sent to live with their great-grandmother, who at some point decided she was done with Gerald.

One day, a kid in this group of students told the dean of discipline that he had bought a ten dollar bill to class, and it had been stolen. She asked me to check things out and said that if any kid knew anything, they would be rewarded for the information with “Bull Bucks,” fake money the kids used to buy small favors like sitting next to friends, a free homework pass, or snacks and supplies (which I and the other teachers paid for, of course). So I asked that the culprit turn it in quickly and it would be over. No takers. I went to the next level and told them about the dean’s deal. Then I started class.
