Toyoya corporation moved its USA headquarters from Southern California to the Dallas suburb of Plano. Many employees were reluctant to move so the company paid for some employees to fly to Plano for a few days to see how they liked it, and to spread the word when they got back. They apparently liked what they saw. Sure, none of the surfing and the coastal weather they had back in Torrance, but better housing and improved levels of consumption in a top tier Dallas suburb. My job was to do price changes throughout the week that corporate sent down and on Saturday night I would come in at midnight and hang the new sale signs for the week. The key to successfully handling any runaway stabilizer event is to accomplish the runaway stabilizer checklist in a reasonably prompt manner so that the runaway is stopped before the trim reaches the full nose-down limit. If you don't, you have made recovery significantly more difficult. The additional training that these crews needed was not in MCAS, how MCAS works, or even in handling a runaway stabilizer. The training they needed was in the proper prioritization of tasks in an emergency. 1. Fly the airplane, 2. Silence the warnings, 3. Confirm the emergency. This process is how you move past the distractions to find, confirm, and correctly action the emergency. There are many accidents by western crews who didn't properly prioritize their otherwise survivable emergencies, too.
